Gangwon-do — Mountains and Sea, an Hour Apart
Drive east from Seoul for two hours and the scenery transforms. The mountains run deeper, the East Sea turns so blue it looks unreal, and buckwheat fields and birch forests slip in between. Gangwon-do is where Koreans go "to clear their heads." For foreign travelers, it's the natural-Korea leg of the trip.
What it is
A province in northeastern Korea. Second-largest by area, sparsely populated — so there's more nature than people. The Taebaek mountain range runs north-to-south, with rugged mountains and highlands to the west, sea cliffs and beaches to the east. Each season has its own appeal.
Cities — choosing where to go matters
- 🏔 Pyeongchang — Winter Olympics host. Daegwallyeong Sheep Ranch, buckwheat fields (Bongpyeong, Lee Hyo-seok Literature House), ski resorts.
- 🌊 Gangneung — East Sea + coffee culture. Anmok Beach Coffee Street, Gyeongpodae, Jeongdongjin (sunrise train).
- 🏖 Sokcho — Seoraksan base + market food. Sokcho Jungang Market dakgangjeong (sweet-spicy chicken), Lake Cheongchoho, Abai Village (Hamhung naengmyeon).
- 🍣 Samcheok / Donghae — quieter beaches and cliffs. Sashimi at Mukho Port.
- 🌲 Inje / Yangyang — birch forest (Inje), surfing (Yangyang's Jukdo Beach). Jukdo has become Korea's surf mecca.
- 🐾 Chuncheon — the closest Gangwon city to Seoul. Dakgalbi + makguksu food, Nami Island (filming location of Winter Sonata).
Food — where Gangwon really shines
- Dakgalbi + makguksu — the Chuncheon combo. Look for the dakgalbi alleys in Myeongdong / Hupyeong-dong.
- Buckwheat noodles / makguksu — Bongpyeong and Pyeongchang. The cold tossed makguksu is the signature.
- Sokcho dakgangjeong — Mansok and Jungang shops at the central market. Spicy or soy.
- Sashimi & mulhoe — any East Sea coast city. Sokcho, Gangneung, Samcheok port fish markets.
- Gondre-bap (mountain-vegetable rice) — Pyeongchang, Jeongseon set meals.
- Jang-kalguksu — Gangneung's spicy knife-cut noodle soup.
Getting there — basically the KTX era
- Seoul → Gangneung: Gangneung KTX line about 2 hours (from Cheongnyangni Station). From Gangneung, the beach is a 20-minute bus ride.
- Seoul → Pyeongchang / Hoengseong: mid-route stations on the Gangneung KTX (Manjong, Pyeongchang). The Olympics line.
- Seoul → Chuncheon: ITX-Cheongchun or the Gyeongchun line, about 1.5 hours. Close and cheap.
- Seoul → Sokcho: intercity bus about 2.5 hours (from Dong Seoul Terminal). A KTX line is planned soon.
- Rental car: best for moving around (Pyeongchang ↔ Gangneung ↔ Sokcho).

Honest tips
- Gangwon-do is big. Don't try to do Gangneung, Sokcho, and Pyeongchang in one day.
- KTX is well-developed only on the Gangneung line. For other cities, you'll transfer to local buses or taxis.
- Yangyang surfing is mainly Jul–Sep. Korea's surf hot zone.
- Jeongdongjin sunrise train (overnight from Seoul) — romantic but uncomfortable. Opinions divide.
- Winter skiing: Pyeongchang, Yongpyong, High1. Many foreigner-friendly resorts.
- Gangwon mountains occasionally have bear / boar advisories. Stay on marked trails.
