Jangsaengpo Whale Culture Village — Ulsan Marine Theme Village where the history of whaling lives on
Jangsaengpo, Nam-gu, Ulsan, was Korea's largest whaling forward base until the 1980s. Now that whaling is prohibited, it has been renovated into a Whale Culture Village that preserves and allows visitors to experience that history, with facilities themed around the sea and whales gathered in one place.
What to see
- Whale Museum — Exhibits the history of whaling, including artifacts from the whaling era and whale skeleton specimens.
- Whale Ecological Experience Center — Observe live dolphins up close and learn about whale ecology.
- Whale Ocean Expedition Vessel — An exploration program that goes out to the open sea by boat to search for wild whales.
- Jangsaengpo Old Village — Recreates a village from the heyday of whaling in the 1960s-70s, where you can walk and experience the atmosphere of an old port.
How to get there
- Approximately 30-40 minutes by car from KTX Ulsan Station, or by city bus from downtown Ulsan towards Jangsaengpo.
- By private car, 20-30 minutes from Ulsan city center; use the large parking lot of the Whale Culture Special Zone.
Travel Tips
- If you combine the museum, experience center, and ocean cruise, you can have a fulfilling itinerary for more than half a day.
- The Whale Ocean Expedition Vessel's operation varies depending on the weather and tide conditions, so please check in advance.
- In early summer, the Jangsaengpo Osaek Hydrangea Garden Hydrangea Festival, held at the same location, can also be enjoyed.
