Gyeongbokgung — Main Palace of the Joseon Dynasty

Founded in 1395, Joseon's primary palace. Geunjeongjeon hall, Gyeonghoeru pavilion, Hyangwonjeong — over 600 years of history. In the heart of Seoul, set against Bugaksan Mountain, it is Korea's signature cultural heritage site.

Season by season

  • 🌸 Spring — plum and apricot blossoms across the palace grounds. The best season for a hanbok stroll.
  • ☀️ Summer — lotus in the Gyeonghoeru pond and vivid painted eaves. In midday heat, focus on indoor halls.
  • 🍁 Autumn — foliage in harmony with tiled roofs. The area around Hyangwonjeong is especially beautiful.
  • ❄️ Winter — Geunjeongjeon under snow. The palace in a snowscape is the most popular photo scene.

Highlights

  • Geunjeongjeon — the throne hall for coronations and state ceremonies.
  • Gyeonghoeru — a pavilion built over a pond, Joseon's grandest banquet space.
  • Hyangwonjeong — a pavilion on a small island, the palace's most picturesque view.
  • Royal Guard changing ceremony — held twice daily in front of Gwanghwamun.

Nearby

Bukchon Hanok Village, the Samcheong-dong cafe street, the National Folk Museum, and Insadong are all within walking distance. Add Changdeokgung for a full-day course.

Photo tips

Wearing hanbok grants free admission; Hyangwonjeong and Gyeonghoeru are the most popular photo spots. Early morning has the fewest crowds.

Visitor info

  • Getting there: Right outside Exit 5 of Gyeongbokgung Station, Subway Line 3.
