Gangneung East Coast 2-Day 1-Night — Sea, Coffee, and Sunrise All at Once

Gangneung is a destination with a well-established itinerary, often called 'the standard course for summer vacation.' The sea, cafes, gourmet restaurants, and sunrise spots are all gathered in one city, and a day trip from Seoul by KTX is also possible. We've compiled a 2-day 1-night itinerary connecting Gyeongpo, Anmok, and Jeongdongjin, focusing on key information.

At a Glance

  • Location: Gangneung City, Gangwon Province (Centered around Gyeongpo Beach, Anmok Beach, Jeongdongjin)
  • Best Season: Sea bathing in June-August, cafes and sunrise year-round
  • Transportation: KTX Seoul→Gangneung approx. 2 hours (day trips also possible), city center by private car/bus
  • Key 3 Places: Gyeongpo Beach (sea bathing, Gyeongpo Lake walk), Anmok Coffee Street (ocean view cafes), Jeongdongjin (sunrise, Badabuchaegil)
  • For Whom: All travelers who want both the sea + atmospheric cafes
  • Slogan: "An East Coast introductory course where you can't go wrong, even for first-timers."

DAY 1 — From Gyeongpo to Anmok

In the morning, enjoy sea bathing and the sandy beach at Gyeongpo Beach, and lightly walk the surrounding path of nearby Gyeongpo Lake. In the afternoon, let's move to Anmok Coffee Street. This is where cafes facing the sea are lined up, creating the image of 'Gangneung=Coffee City'. A cup of coffee listening to the sound of waves, followed by the sunset, is the classic itinerary for Day 1.

DAY 2 — Jeongdongjin Sunrise and Badabuchaegil

It's beneficial to start early on Day 2. Jeongdongjin is famous as the train station closest to the sea and is considered a top sunrise spot. The nearby Jeongdong-Simgok Badabuchaegil is a trekking course that walks along coastal cliffs, allowing you to see the morning sea up close. If you have time left, you can move to Gangmun Beach or Sacheon Beach and enjoy a final dip in the water.

How to Get There and Tips

Accessible from Seoul in about 2 hours by KTX Gangneung Line, so a light-packed walking tour is sufficient. However, there's a distance between Gyeongpo and Jeongdongjin, so it's convenient to combine buses, taxis, and rental cars for city travel. During the peak season from late July to early August, accommodations fill up quickly, so aiming for weekdays right before peak season will help manage both cost and crowds.

Nearby Courses to Combine

Heading south, there's Yangyang Surfing, and further south, transparent canoes at Samcheok Jangho Port. Using Gangneung as a base camp, it's good to expand into a 2-3 night course traversing the Gangwon East Coast.

Before You Go Check & FAQ

  • Essentials: Sea bathing items, light outer clothes (for morning/sea breeze), sunscreen.
  • Q. Is a day trip possible? Possible by KTX, but if you want to see the sunrise, a 1-night stay is recommended.
  • Q. Is it possible without a car? City buses and taxis are sufficient. However, for Jeongdongjin and Badabuchaegil, checking the timetable is necessary.
  • Q. Can I just enjoy the cafes? Anmok Coffee Street alone can make for a half-day course.

If you don't want to give up on the sea, coffee, or sunrise — Gangneung is the safest choice.
