For a summer trip to Namdo (southern regions), one indoor spot is essential. Being outside from 1 PM to 4 PM itself ruins the itinerary. Taebaeksanmaek Literature Museum in Beolgyo, Boseong, is the best place to fill that time, and at the same time, it can become the most memorable place on this trip.
Jo Jung-rae's novel Taebaeksanmaek begins with Beolgyo as its setting. And if you walk out of this literature museum, the places that appear in the novel actually stand within walking distance. It's a structure where you read and then go out and walk.

Taebaeksanmaek is an epic novel depicting Korea from immediately after liberation through the Korean War, and Beolgyo is where the story begins. This is because the conflicts of that era were condensed into one small town (eup). There was a port, goods came and went, and thus people and ideologies clashed.
The literature museum was established to commemorate this novel and the literary spirit of author Jo Jung-rae. Its purpose goes beyond mere exhibition. It is to make people reread the history of division with Beolgyo as a base, and to become the starting point for literary tours.
The reason this place is special is not its exhibits, but its location. If you walk out of the literature museum and stroll through Beolgyo town, the places from the novel appear one after another.
| Place | What it is |
|---|---|
| Honggyo Bridge | It is the largest among the rainbow-arched bridges designated as national treasures |
| Sohwa Bridge | A bridge crossing Beolgyocheon Stream. The backdrop for crucial scenes in the novel |
| Boseong Inn | The actual model for Namdo Inn appearing in the novel |
| Jungdo Embankment | A dike road created by land reclamation |
| Taebaeksanmaek Literary Street | Approximately 750m from Beolgyo Post Office to Beolgyo-eup Office |
The 750m Literary Street does not take more than 20 minutes even if walked slowly. Reading about the novel's setting at the literature museum and then actually walking on that setting is the standard itinerary for this trip.
| Time | Itinerary |
|---|---|
| Morning | Arrive in Beolgyo, early lunch |
| 1-3 PM | Visit Taebaeksanmaek Literature Museum (hottest time of day) |
| 3-4 PM | Walk 750m Literary Street — Boseong Inn, Sohwa Bridge |
| 4-5 PM | Honggyo Bridge, Jungdo Embankment |
| After 5 PM | Move towards Boseong |
Beolgyo is at the eastern end of Boseong-gun, and the green tea fields and the sea are in the west. If you split a day, you can see both.
Is it worth seeing even if I haven't read the novel? Since the exhibition explains the historical background from the start, you can follow along without prior knowledge. However, the impression felt while walking the Literary Street differs greatly for those who have read the novel.
How long does the visit take? If you only view the exhibition, it's about an hour. If you walk the Literary Street as well, it becomes a half-day itinerary.
When is it closed? Every Monday, Lunar New Year's Day, Chuseok Day, and January 1st.
How much is the admission fee? Adults 2,000 won, youth and military 1,500 won, children 1,000 won. For groups, it's 1,500 won, 1,000 won, and 500 won, respectively.
Can I eat Chammkomak in Beolgyo in the summer? The season for Chammkomak is winter. Please be aware that it's not in season during the summer.
Taebaeksanmaek Literature Museum is a 3-minute walk from Beolgyo Public Bus Terminal, costs 2,000 won for adults, and is closed every Monday. During the summer season, it is open until 6 PM.
Its role in a summer Namdo trip is clear. Spending the hottest hours indoors, and as the sun softens, walking out to the 750m Literary Street that was the setting of the novel. Honggyo Bridge, Sohwa Bridge, and Boseong Inn are along that path. A literature museum where you can immediately step onto what you've read is rare.
Admission fees and operating hours may change, so please check before visiting.
