Jeju Aewol Gwakji — Emerald Beach, Sunset, and Summer All in One

West Jeju's Aewol(涯月) is where 'sea, cafes, and sunsets' gather in one itinerary. At its center is Gwakjigwamul Beach (Gwakji Beach). The water color is close to emerald, making for beautiful photos, and around sunset, the horizon turns entirely red. In summer, with the beach opening and summer flower festivals overlapping, it's good to visit once and enjoy many things. (Opening dates and festival schedules change annually, so check official announcements before visiting.)

At a Glance

  • Where: Gwakji-ri, Aewol-eup, Jeju-si — approximately 30-40 minutes by car from Jeju Airport, along the western coastal road
  • What: Emerald white sand beach + Sunset spot + Summer swimming beach + Nearby walking trails and cafes
  • When: Summer swimming beach opening season (typically late June to early September), Sunset is around 7:30 PM in July-August
  • Who with: Suitable for family water play, couple sunsets, and friends' cafe tours
  • Quick Tip: Water play during the day, move to the coastal walk 1 hour before sunset for the sunset — the itinerary is short, so everything can be done in one day.

Gwakjigwamul Beach — Why 'Emerald'?

Gwakji Beach has fine sand and a gentle depth, so the water reflects clearly. At midday, it's jade-colored, and even on cloudy days, its turquoise hue remains vibrant, making it a popular photo spot. On one side of the white sand beach, there's an open-air bath where Jeju's unique 'gwamul (open-air spring water)' gushes out, preserving the traditional way of rinsing off after water play. On days with strong waves, stay within the safety line, and it's best to swim during the opening period and lifeguard duty hours.

Sunset — The Hour Before Sunset is Key

Aewol's coast faces west, so there are many sunset spots. The Handam Coastal Walk, within walking distance from Gwakji, is a path along the basalt coast, and as you walk alongside the sea, you'll naturally reach a sunset point. The time of sunset varies by season, so it's good to check the sunset time on the day of your visit and find a spot 30 minutes to 1 hour beforehand. Sunsets viewed from seaside cafes or accommodations with good views, facing the sea, are also popular.

Summer Flower Festival — Until Mid-July

In the vicinity of Aewol, the Summer Flower & Trumpet Vine Festival is held in summer (based on public information, mid-May to around July 15). Since it's the peak season for summer flowers like trumpet vines and hydrangeas, it's good to combine it with your beach itinerary. However, as the schedule, period, and location are adjusted annually, first check the official festival announcement and plan your route.

How to Get There · Parking

  • Rental Car: Jeju Airport → via Pyeonghwa-ro/Coastal Road, approx. 30-40 minutes. On summer peak season weekends, there can be traffic congestion on the coastal road, so distribute your travel by going early in the morning or just before sunset.
  • Parking: Use the public parking lot near the beach. During peak season and on weekend afternoons, parking fills up quickly, so early arrival is recommended.
  • Public Transportation: Buses to Aewol are available from Jeju City, but service intervals are long, so a rental car is more convenient.

Water Play · Safety Check

  • Check the beach's opening period and lifeguard operating hours and swim within those times.
  • Be aware of rip currents and swells, do not go beyond the safety line.
  • Prepare for UV rays and dehydration (hat, bottled water); open-air spring water is cold, so children should be accompanied by a guardian.
  • Check on-site regulations for pets, cooking, alcohol, etc.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

  • Q. What time is sunset? A. In summer, it's generally around 7:30 PM, but it varies by date. Check the sunset time on the day of your visit and arriving 1 hour beforehand is recommended.
  • Q. What if it rains? A. Even on cloudy days, the water color is vibrant, but sunset viewing will be difficult. Change your itinerary to nearby cafes or indoor attractions.
  • Q. Can I go with children? A. The gentle depth makes it suitable for family water play, but only during the opening period and lifeguard hours.
  • Q. Is the festival definitely happening? A. Since the period and location change annually, checking the official announcement is paramount.

Also Good to See

If it's a shame to only see Jeju, compare other summer courses at Jeju Island's overall attractions and Hot Spots. If you're curious about the East Coast's sea and sunrise, another way to plan your trip is to combine it with a 'East Coast 1-night, 2-day' course under the theme of 'West Sunset vs. East Sunrise'.

The essence of summer Jeju is a short and fulfilling itinerary: 'daytime water play → evening sunset → night cafe'. You can experience all of this flow in one place, Gwakji.
