Gwangyang — Home of Maesil, Early Summer Seomjingang Outing

Gwangyang, part of Jeonnam-Gwangju Metropolitan City, is the hometown of maesil (plum) nestled by the Seomjingang River. In June, the maesil orchards along the river are full of greenish fruits, and the village becomes busy with maesil harvesting and making maesil-cheong. From the clear Seomjingang River and Baekunsan Valley to Gwangyang Bulgogi grilled over charcoal — it's a great place for an early summer gourmet and scenery outing.

Gwangyang's Summer Charms

Gwangyang is a region where the Seomjingang River flow and Baekunsan foothills harmoniously blend. Although famous for plum blossoms in spring, the maesil harvest and the sight of jangdokdae at Cheongmaesil Farm in early June are the highlight. In mid-summer, it's good to cool off in the Baekunsan Valley, and in the evening, enjoy the course of looking down at the Gwangyang Bay night view from Gubongsan Observatory.

What to Do in Gwangyang

  • Cheongmaesil Farm (Daap-myeon): A maesil orchard overlooking the Seomjingang River. During the June harvest season, maesil picking and maesil-cheong making experiences are offered. The jangdokdae scenery with thousands of jars lined up is a famous symbol of Gwangyang.
  • Seomjingang Riverside: A driving and cycling route running alongside the clear river and sandbars. The refreshing river scenery in early summer is superb.
  • Baekunsan: The main mountain of Gwangyang. The natural recreational forest and summer valleys are cool. Trekking in the Hanjjae area is also popular.
  • Gubongsan Observatory: Offers a panoramic view of Gwangyang Bay, the steel mill, and the sea. It is especially famous as a night view spot.
  • Baealdo Riverside Park: A walking and relaxation space at the Seomjingang River estuary, with beautiful sunset views.

Food

  • Gwangyang Bulgogi: Gwangyang's signature dish, thinly sliced Hanwoo (Korean beef) grilled over charcoal on the spot. The sweet seasoning and smoky aroma are superb.
  • Maesil: Seasonal cheongmaesil (green plums) in June, maesil-cheong (plum extract), and maesil processed products.
  • Seomjingang Jaecheopguk: A cool and light hangover soup made with Seomjingang clams.

Summer Visit Tips & Itinerary

  • Maesil harvest and experience are key in June — check farm-specific schedules in advance.
  • The early morning mist along the Seomjingang Riverside is the most beautiful.
  • Traditional Gwangyang Bulgogi restaurants (nopo) can have long waits during lunchtime, so go a little early.
  • Recommended Itinerary: Morning Cheongmaesil Farm → Seomjingang Riverside drive and lunch (Gwangyang Bulgogi) → Afternoon Baekunsan Valley → Evening Gubongsan Observatory night view.

How to Get There

  • By Train (Gateway is Suncheon Station) — Gwangyang effectively has no high-speed train passenger station, so the actual gateway is the neighboring Suncheon Station. KTX, SRT, and Jeolla Line trains stop at Suncheon Station, taking approximately 2 hours 40 minutes to 3 hours from Yongsan, Seoul.
  • Suncheon Station → Gwangyang — Use the intercity buses connecting Suncheon and Gwangyang (Suncheon 77·777, Gwangyang 990·991) or express buses from Suncheon Comprehensive Bus Terminal to Gwangyang Terminal (about 10 times a day, approximately 30-40 minutes).
  • By Express Bus — Direct buses also operate from Seoul (Central City, etc.) to Gwangyang and Jungma Terminals.
  • By Car — Gwangyang IC on the Namhae Expressway. Parking lots are available at attractions such as Gwangyang Bay and Maehwa Village.

During the peak season of the Maehwa Festival in March, Suncheon Station and the Maehwa Village area can be very crowded, so it's advisable to move early.
