Gwangyang — Home of Maesil, an Early-Summer Trip along the Seomjin River

Gwangyang, in Jeonnam Province, is the home of maesil (Korean green plum), set along the Seomjin River. In June the riverside plum orchards fill with pale-green fruit, and the town busies itself harvesting maesil and curing plum syrup. With the clear Seomjin River, the valleys of Mt. Baegun, and charcoal-grilled Gwangyang bulgogi, it makes a fine early-summer trip for food and scenery.

Gwangyang's Summer Charm

Gwangyang weaves together the Seomjin River and the slopes of Mt. Baegun. It's famous for plum blossoms in spring, but the highlight of early summer in June is the maesil harvest and the rows of clay jars at Cheongmaesil Farm. In midsummer, cool off in Mt. Baegun's valleys, then watch the Gwangyang Bay night view from Gubongsan Observatory.

What to Do in Gwangyang

  • Cheongmaesil Farm (Dapo-myeon): A plum orchard overlooking the Seomjin River. In the June harvest you can pick maesil and cure plum syrup. The rows of thousands of clay jars (jangdokdae) are an iconic sight.
  • Seomjin riverside: A drive or bike path along the clear river and sandbars — refreshing early-summer scenery.
  • Mt. Baegun: Gwangyang's guardian mountain, with a recreational forest and cool summer valleys; the Hanjae trek is popular.
  • Gubongsan Observatory: Gwangyang Bay and the sea at a glance — famous especially for its night view.
  • Baealdo Waterside Park: A stroll and rest spot at the river mouth, lovely at sunset.

Local Food

  • Gwangyang bulgogi: Thinly sliced hanwoo grilled to order over charcoal — sweet-savory with a smoky aroma.
  • Maesil: June's in-season green plums and plum products.
  • Seomjin jaecheop-guk: A clean, refreshing soup made with Seomjin River clams.

Summer Tips & Route

  • The maesil harvest/experience is centered on June — check each farm's schedule.
  • The Seomjin riverside is prettiest with morning mist; visit bulgogi institutions a bit early at lunch.
  • Suggested route: Morning Cheongmaesil Farm → Seomjin drive & lunch (bulgogi) → afternoon Mt. Baegun valley → evening Gubongsan night view.
